The quick answer

Yes, hyaluronic acid (HA) lip filler can be dissolved. A doctor or other prescriber injects an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which breaks the filler down. Some change shows within hours, the full effect takes up to two weeks, and most lips need one or two visits. It only works on HA filler, it cannot be done safely at home, and it should be carried out by a medically qualified practitioner who assesses you in person first. Non-HA products such as silicone cannot be dissolved this way. If you are in Birmingham and unhappy with lip filler, book a consultation with Dr Jas Gill before doing anything else.

Quick answers to the questions people ask most

  • Can all lip filler be dissolved? Only hyaluronic acid filler. Ask which product you had.

  • How long does dissolving take? Treatment takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Full results take up to two weeks.

  • When can I get it dissolved? Usually after swelling settles, around two weeks, unless it is an emergency.

  • Will it hurt? Expect stinging and swelling. Topical numbing cream is usually used.

  • Can I just dissolve one lump? Sometimes partially, but the enzyme spreads, so the whole lip may reduce.

  • When can I have filler again? Wait at least two weeks, because active enzyme would break down new product.

What is hyaluronidase and how does it dissolve lip filler?

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid, the same substance used in most modern lip fillers. Because the filler is HA, the enzyme can reverse it. The body then clears the broken-down material naturally. The Cleveland Clinic notes that fillers made of silicone or other substances cannot be dissolved this way, so identifying the product you had is the first step.

Save Face, the UK register of accredited practitioners, points out that hyaluronidase is not directly licensed for dissolving dermal filler, so it is used off-label with informed consent when it is in the patient's best interest. That is one more reason this should be a doctor-led decision rather than a quick add-on at a salon.

When should you dissolve lip filler, and when should you wait?

This is where clinical judgement matters most. In my consultations I see three very different situations, and they call for different answers.

1. Emergency: act immediately

If a lip turns white or dusky, becomes severely painful, or develops mottled skin within hours of treatment, this can signal a blocked blood vessel (vascular occlusion). This is a medical emergency. Hyaluronidase is used straight away, and you should contact your injector at once. Our dermal filler aftercare guide lists the warning signs.

2. Early swelling: usually wait

Fresh lips often look larger and uneven for the first one to two weeks. Save Face advises that swelling and bruising can take two to three weeks to settle and that clinics usually review after about a fortnight. Dissolving too early means you may remove filler that would have looked right once the swelling went down. My review window exists for exactly this reason.

3. Settled results you are unhappy with: assess, then decide

Once the lips have settled, dissolving is a reasonable option for overfilled lips, lumps, a duck-lip shape, or a result that no longer suits your face. Sometimes a smaller adjustment works better than a full dissolve, and sometimes the right answer is to leave the filler to settle and refine it later.

What happens at a filler dissolving appointment?

  1. Consultation and history. We review what you had, when, and where. We check for allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and bleeding risks.

  2. Assessment of the whole face. Lips are judged against the chin, nose and cheeks. A lip can look too large simply because the lower face is under-projected, in which case dissolving is not the answer.

  3. Treatment. Hyaluronidase is diluted and injected in small amounts into the filler. A partial dissolve uses less enzyme.

  4. Review. We check progress at around two weeks and decide whether a second visit or a fresh, more conservative treatment is appropriate.

Most lip filler dissolves in one to two visits, though large volumes or nodules may need more.

What are the risks and side effects of dissolving lip filler?

  • Swelling, bruising and tenderness, usually up to a week.

  • Itching or mild allergic reactions. A patch test is usually offered in non-emergency cases.

  • Severe allergy. People with a history of anaphylaxis to bee stings are not suitable.

  • Loss of some natural HA. Hyaluronidase can also dissolve your own hyaluronic acid, so lips may look thinner or slightly deflated for a short time. Save Face says this should replenish within days, while the Cleveland Clinic describes it as often temporary.

  • Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Seek urgent care for swelling of the eyelids, lips or tongue, wheezing, or difficulty swallowing.

Can filler dissolve on its own, and does massage help?

Yes. HA gel fillers break down naturally over roughly 6 to 18 months according to Save Face. Massage speeds this only modestly and would need to be vigorous and frequent. If you have a small lump, tell your practitioner rather than massaging it yourself, because they may be able to resolve it safely in clinic.

How do you choose who dissolves your lip filler in Birmingham?

Dissolving filler is a medical procedure, and the person doing it needs to be able to prescribe, assess and manage complications. Before booking, ask:

  • Are you a doctor, dentist or nurse prescriber, and can I see your registration?

  • Do you keep hyaluronidase on site, and what is your protocol for a suspected vascular occlusion?

  • Will you examine me in person and take a medical history first?

  • Who do I contact after treatment if something changes?

At Dr Jas Clinic, new patients have a 45-minute consultation costing £70, deducted from treatment if you proceed. It covers your medical history, risks, expected outcomes and aftercare, and you receive a WhatsApp contact for post-treatment questions. England is also moving towards licensing for non-surgical cosmetic procedures, but rules are still developing, so checking credentials yourself remains essential. Our guide to the new UK cosmetic procedure rules explains what is changing, and our 7-step guide to choosing an aesthetics clinic in Birmingham covers the wider checklist.

Is dissolving always the right answer? A doctor's view

No. Many of the patients who ask me to dissolve their lips are actually unhappy with proportion, not volume. I assess facial balance, movement and volume loss across the whole face before recommending anything. Sometimes the best plan is a partial dissolve and a smaller, better-placed treatment later. Sometimes it is simply to wait. Having trained doctors, surgeons and nurses in filler technique and complication management, I am cautious about dissolving on impulse, and I would rather explain the options than rush you into a decision. Frequently asked questions

Can lip filler be dissolved? Yes, if it is hyaluronic acid filler. Hyaluronidase breaks it down, with full results in up to two weeks.

Does dissolving lip filler hurt? Most people feel stinging and tenderness. Numbing cream helps, and swelling can last up to a week.

How long after filler can I dissolve it? Usually after about two weeks, once swelling has settled, unless there is an emergency such as compromised blood supply.

Can I dissolve just part of my lip filler? A partial dissolve is possible, but the enzyme spreads, so the whole enhancement may reduce.

Can I get lip filler again after dissolving? Yes, but wait at least two weeks so the enzyme does not break down the new filler.

Is it safe to dissolve lip filler at a beauty salon? It is a prescription-only medical procedure with a risk of allergic reaction, so it should be done by a qualified prescriber who can manage complications.

Can silicone or permanent filler be dissolved? No. Hyaluronidase only works on hyaluronic acid.
